The Venice City Pass as Public Transport Ticket
The Venice City Pass (Turbopass) optionally includes a public transport ticket for all public transportation (ACTV) in Venice. This allows you to use unlimited water buses (Vaporetti) as well as buses and trams to explore the old town and lagoon islands. The ticket is not valid for airport transfers (such as airport bus Line 5 or Alilaguna boats) and private boats (water taxis, gondolas). The validity period is 24, 48, 72 hours etc. from the first validation (for passes of 4 days or more = 7 days).
Practical Usage
Step-by-step to your first journey:
- Collect & validate ticket: Exchange your City Pass voucher at a Venezia Unica machine or counter (e.g. Piazzale Roma or train station) for an ACTV ticket. Before each journey you must scan the ticket at the white validator (at the pier or in the vehicle) until it beeps.
- Board & travel: After validation, board the vehicle. During the validity period you can travel and transfer unlimited times.
- Inspection: Inspectors conduct spot checks - you must show your valid ticket. Without validation you risk a fine of €50-100.
Timetables and Public Transport App
Most lines operate daily from 5:00 AM to midnight. From midnight special night lines (e.g. Line N) run hourly until about 5:00 AM. For orientation we recommend the official app "AVM Venezia" (free for iOS and Android). The app enables route planning and digital ticket purchase (including validation).
Important Lines and Connections
- From the airport to the city: The fastest way from Marco Polo airport is with the ACTV Aerobus Line 5 to Piazzale Roma bus station (approx. 20 min.; not included in pass). Alternatively, the Alilaguna boat shuttle takes you directly to the center (approx. 1 hour; separate ticket).
- From the train station to the center: From Santa Lucia train station (Ferrovia stop) and from Piazzale Roma, the main vaporetti depart for the center. Line 1 travels the Grand Canal with all stops; Line 2 only stops at important stations and is correspondingly faster.
- Lagoon islands: From Fondamente Nove, for example, line 12 goes to Murano, Burano and Torcello.
A journey on Line 1 along the Grand Canal or an excursion on Line 12 to Murano/Burano are among the highlights.
